Congressman Derrick Van Orden Is Raising Our Costs

Wonderstate Coffee roasts half a million pounds of coffee a year and employs 85 people — a thriving small business that's become part of the community. But Congressman Derrick Van Orden's support for reckless tariffs is crushing them. TJ is now looking at over $100,000 in new tariff costs — on top of all his other supplies getting more expensive — and he's had no choice but to raise prices. Meanwhile, Van Orden continues to stand by tariffs and even says they’ve been successful.

Check the facts:

  • Van Orden has repeatedly voted to support tariffs and block Congress from challenging them: Van Orden voted for H. Res. 707, which blocked Congress from challenging President Trump's tariffs through March 2026. He also voted against a resolution to disapprove of tariffs on Canada in February 2026, siding with tariffs over his own constituents.

  • Tariffs have sent coffee prices soaring — and there's no domestic alternative: Retail coffee prices surged nearly 21% compared to the same time last year, driven in part by tariffs on Brazil (50%), Vietnam (20%), and Colombia (10%) — the countries that supply the vast majority of U.S. coffee imports. America imports more than 99% of its coffee, meaning there is no domestic supply to absorb the costs.

  • Van Orden called the tariffs "a success": When asked about how President Trump has handled tariffs, Van Orden said they have been a success because of the number of countries that want to negotiate trade deals — even as small businesses like Wonderstate are being crushed by the costs.

Small businesses like Wonderstate are the backbone of Wisconsin's 3rd District — and Van Orden is making it harder for them to survive. It doesn't have to be this way. It's time for Derrick Van Orden to stop protecting tariffs that are raising costs for Wisconsin families and small businesses.

Congressman Derrick Van Orden promised his constituents that Medicaid would never be cut. He even signed a letter pledging to protect the program that families like Kate's rely on to pay for their mother's long-term care. Then he turned around and voted for the largest Medicaid cut in U.S. history – slashing over $900 billion from the program and forcing nearly 8.7 million people to lose coverage.

Check the facts:

  • Van Orden voted for the largest Medicaid cut in U.S. history after promising it would never be cut: Van Orden voted for the Republican Tax Law, which slashes over $900 billion from Medicaid – more than all previous Medicaid cuts in history combined. The cuts will force nearly 8.7 million people to lose coverage, particularly affecting children, parents, seniors, and people with disabilities.

  • Van Orden signed a letter promising Kate her mother's Medicaid benefits would be protected: When Kate met with Van Orden to express concerns about potential Medicaid cuts, he promised that Medicaid would never be cut and even signed a letter doubling down on that pledge. Months later, he voted to gut the program her family depends on.

Families across Wisconsin's 3rd District are facing devastating consequences as Van Orden's broken promise forces states to make painful cuts to Medicaid programs – it doesn't have to be this way. It's time for Derrick Van Orden to keep his word, reverse the damage, and restore funding for Medicaid.

Working families across Wisconsin's 3rd District are paying thousands more for health insurance in 2026, because Congressman Derrick Van Orden refused to support an extension of health care tax credits. While premiums skyrocket for his constituents, Van Orden has prioritized permanent tax breaks for the ultra-wealthy and big corporations over affordable health care for working families.

Check the facts:

  • Health insurance premiums have spiked dramatically after Van Orden let health care tax credits expire: More than 30,000 families in Van Orden's district relied on health care tax credits to afford insurance. When those credits expired at the end of 2025, premiums jumped by thousands of dollars per year. Marty, a constituent from Sparta, received notice that her premiums for a basic plan would increase by $12,000 per year.

  • Van Orden also voted for the largest Medicaid cut in history, taking care away from millions of Americans.Earlier this year Van Orden voted for the Republican Tax Law, which includes "significant cuts to Medicaid, food benefits, and other programs" and rips healthcare away from 10 million Americans.

Too many Wisconsin families are struggling to afford basic health insurance, forcing impossible choices between coverage and other necessities – it doesn't have to be this way. It's time for Derrick Van Orden to vote to restore our health care tax credits and fight for working families instead.
