As COVID Death Toll Nears 500K, Opportunity Wisconsin Calls on Senator Johnson to Back COVID Relief

Monday, February 22, 2021

MADISON, Wis.—Opportunity Wisconsin released a statement today as the United States inches closer to the grim milestone of 500,000 American deaths from COVID-19.

Dr. Rachel Hughes, a southern Wisconsin emergency medicine physician and Opportunity Wisconsin steering committee member:

“As we approach the once unimaginable scenario of over a half million American lives lost to COVID-19, including nearly 6,900 Wisconsinites,  this milestone is a somber reminder of the war we are still waging on this virus—both physically and financially. Wisconsinites are struggling and we need our elected officials to meet this moment with empathy and immediate action. We’re calling on Senator Johnson to do both: listen to your constituents like Tricia and Jessica, and pass COVID relief now.”

Last week, Opportunity Wisconsin launched a $1M statewide TV ad campaign calling on Senator Johnson to stop blocking COVID relief checks for Wisconsin families and workers.

In October, Opportunity Wisconsin partnered with COVID Survivors for Change to honor the 1,500 Badger State lives lost during the pandemic.

New $1M TV Ad Campaign By Opportunity Wisconsin Urges Senator Ron Johnson to Stop Blocking Relief Checks

Tuesday, February 16, 2021

WATCH: Statewide TV ads [“Jessica”, “Tricia”] feature Wisconsin residents struggling through the pandemic calling on Johnson to support badly-needed relief checks as part of COVID relief legislation

Opportunity Wisconsin also takes out full-page ad n Johnson’s hometown newspaper while he’s back from Washington to make message loud and clear

MADISON, Wis.— Opportunity Wisconsin today launched  a $1 million statewide TV ad campaign calling on Senator Ron Johnson to stop blocking relief checks for Wisconsin families as part of COVID relief legislation being considered by the Senate. The ads will blanket most of the state for the next several weeks leading up to an expected vote in March on the American Rescue Plan.

The spots feature personal stories from Jessica, a mother from Horicon who’s struggling to make ends meet while working to support her father and grandparents, as well as Tricia, a daycare director in Juneau. Both urge their fellow Wisconsinites to call Senator Johnson and demand that he backs relief checks. The ads will run on TV in the Milwaukee, Green Bay, Madison, and La Crosse markets. Opportunity Wisconsin also took out a full-page ad in the Oshkosh Northwestern, Johnson’s hometown newspaper, while he’s back this week for Congressional recess to make sure he hears the message about relief checks loud and clear.

The ad campaign kicks off Opportunity Wisconsin’s 2021 work holding Senator Johnson accountable and urging him to support legislation that will help Wisconsin families.

“Wisconsin residents are struggling and Senator Johnson is only making it worse. Senator Johnson championed a $2 trillion tax giveaway for his wealthy corporate donors, but now he’s blocking badly-needed COVID relief checks for millions of Wisconsin families,” said Meghan Roh, Opportunity Wisconsin Program Director. “These ads send a powerful message we hope Senator Johnson hears loud and clear. Opportunity Wisconsin will continue to push Senator Johnson to support legislation that supports Wisconsin families who need help now.”

“Senator Ron Johnson has done everything he can to stop us from getting the relief we need...it makes me feel like we don’t matter to him,” said Jessica K., a mother from Horicon struggling to make ends meet while working to support her father and grandparents.

Tricia P., a Juneau daycare director, shared the struggles the families at the daycare face, “Kids just share their stories, ‘Mom and Dad said that we can’t have dinner tonight because we don’t have any food.’ or ‘We can’t pay our house rent so we might get kicked out.’”

[WATCH TRICIA'S FULL AD]

A provision in the American Rescue Plan to send $1,400 checks to each adult and dependent in a household would give $7.8 billion to Wisconsin families, helping 4 million adults and 1.5 million children in the state. In 2017, Senator Johnson eagerly supported a $1.9 trillion tax giveaway to America’s billionaires. Yet in December, he led the charge to stop a bipartisan effort to provide similar relief checks to Wisconsinites, with Politico writing that Johnson was “the guy who twice shut down...stimulus checks that would have gone to hundreds of thousands of his constituents.” And just last week, Senator Johnson argued against additional COVID relief, claiming Wisconsinites have “excess savings.” His constituents highlighted in these ads would strongly disagree.

Food insecurity is a major problem in Wisconsin. Nine percent of Wisconsin households have reported struggling with putting food on the table in any given week. That number is higher among households with children where 12 percent of Wisconsin adults living with children reported that the children were going hungry due to lack of money to buy food. According to Feeding Wisconsin, there has been a 58 percent increase in the number of people seeking help getting food.

Nearly 18 percent of Wisconsinites have reported that eviction or foreclosure were likely in the next two months and close to 1 in 3 residents have expressed difficulty in covering usual household expenses.

STATEMENT: Senator Johnson Votes Against Working Wisconsinites, Stands in the Way of Relief Once Again

Tuesday, February 2, 2021

MADISON, Wis.—Opportunity Wisconsin released a statement today on Senator Ron Johnson voting against the first step in providing COVID relief to Wisconsinites:

Meghan Roh, Program Director:

“Senator Johnson had no issue voting for a $2 trillion dollar tax giveaway for millionaires like himself, but when it comes to urgently-needed COVID relief for his constituents, somehow the price tag is too high. Wisconsin deserves senators who will fight for our values and support our families struggling in the pandemic, not hide behind procedural excuses. We urge Senator Johnson to stop standing in the way of robust relief measures that we need now.”

In December, Johnson blocked a bipartisan effort to provide $1,200 direct payment checks to Wisconsinites. As Politico reported, Johnson is “the guy who twice shut down $1,200 stimulus checks that would have gone to hundreds of thousands of his constituents.” Today, Johnson voted against the first step in passing the American Rescue Act, which includes $1,400 in direct payments and $400 billion for vaccine distribution and improved school safety.

STATEMENT: Ron Johnson Must Work with Biden Administration to Bring COVID Relief to Wisconsin Families

Wednesday, January 20, 2021

MADISON, Wis.— Today, Opportunity Wisconsin released the following statement calling on U.S. Senator Ron Johnson to work with the Biden administration to bring much-needed economic relief to Wisconsin families.

Meghan Roh, Program Director:

“Every four years, regardless of political party, our country comes together to celebrate democracy and to write a new chapter in our history. It also presents an opportunity for our elected officials to put partisanship aside and work together on behalf of the American people.

“As our nation surpassed a grim milestone yesterday with the death of over 400,000 of our friends and neighbors due to COVID-19, it’s imperative Congress move immediately to address both the public health and financial crises we still face.

“Despite his out-of-touch track record of obstruction, we call on Senator Johnson to work with the incoming Administration to provide much-needed and long-overdue relief for Wisconsin families still reeling from the pandemic. The last thing we need is for our senator to stand in the way of potentially life-saving action over the coming weeks.”

Last month, Senator Johnson rejected $1,200 in direct emergency payments to Americans citing the impact on America’s deficit. During his floor remarks, Senator Johnson failed to mention his support for the 2017 tax cuts which not only exploded the deficit by over $1 trillion, but also personally enriched the millionaire Senator. Ultimately, Senator Johnson also voted against the final pandemic relief package, which passed Congress with significant bipartisan support.

STATEMENT: Area Arsonist Ron Johnson Denies Role in Today’s Capital Chaos

Wednesday, January 6, 2021

MADISON, Wis.— This evening Opportunity Wisconsin released the following statement after U.S. Senator Ron Johnson refused to bear any responsibility for today’s violent chaos in our nation’s capital. This comes after weeks of Senator Johnson peddling dangerous election and public health conspiracy theories, and months—even years—of blind and alarming loyalty to a President who time-and-time again has sought to undermine our democracy and the will of Wisconsin voters.

After refusing to acknowledge November's election results, last week Senator Johnson claimed a "large percentage of the population don't view this election as legitimate" and declared he was “not going to do what Democrats and many in the media want us to do, which is just shut up, sweep all of this under the rug and move on.” These statements came after an October interview where Senator Johnson said, “Our country as we know it will not be recognizable if Joe Biden and Chuck Schumer gain power...They will never relinquish power if they get it, we cannot let them get it.”

Meghan Roh, Program Director:

“Whether it’s denying working Wisconsinites emergency economic support, promulgating unproven and dangerous COVID treatments, or perpetuating alarming conspiracy theories originating in the darkest corners of society, Ron Johnson continues to put political power over the people of Wisconsin—and this is all in just the past few weeks. Today will forever be remembered as one of our nation’s darkest days and we will not forget the role Ron Johnson played in the attempt to undermine the will of the people in a desperate attempt to hold onto power he does not deserve.”

Just days prior, Senator Johnson chaired a COVID-19 hearing touting “fringe science” and putting the voices of “quacks over his constituents.”

Finally, after yet another alarming hearing—this time giving a platform to the same conspiracy theories echoed by today’s terrorists in the Capital—Senator Johnson announced his intent to object to the will of voters as Congress prepared to certify the election results.

In a stinging editorial published in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel before today’s events unfolded, authors wrote, “Johnson has joined a defeated candidate who is trying to nullify the voices of American voters while propagating baseless conspiracy theories about voting irregularities. He has violated his oath of office and in doing so, Johnson has forfeited his right to represent the people of Wisconsin.”

Part-Time Senator and Full-Time Grinch, Ron Johnson, Rejects COVID Relief for Working Wisconsinites

Tuesday, December 22, 2020

EAU CLAIRE, Wis.— Today Opportunity Wisconsin released the following statement after U.S. Senator Ron Johnson voted against the bipartisan COVID aid package, which aims to bring much-needed and long-overdue economic relief to folks across the Badger State, and includes direct payments, COVID test funding, rental and nutrition assistance, unemployment benefits, small business loans and grants, and school and childcare funding.

Reba Krueger, Deputy Program Director:

“After blocking $1,200 direct payments on Friday, I guess we shouldn’t be surprised that today Senator Ron Johnson took his contempt for working Wisconsin families a step further with his vote against emergency COVID relief. While there is much, much more Congress needs to do in order to support our friends and neighbors that have been economically devastated during this pandemic, now is not the time to play partisan politics with people’s lives. As we head into the depths of a long Wisconsin winter, Badger State residents will have Senator Johnson to thank for being left out in the cold.”

In a floor speech Friday, Senator Johnson rejected the $1,200 in direct payments citing the impact on America’s deficit. Unfortunately, Senator Johnson failed to mention his support for the 2017 tax cuts which not only exploded the deficit by over $1 trillion, but also personally enriched the millionaire Senator

Wisconsin Small Business Owner: “Sen. Johnson is working very, very hard...at embarrassing himself.”

Friday, December 18, 2020

Virtual discussion with State Treasurer Godlewski comes as COVID relief negotiations continue in Congress

WATCH/DOWNLOAD VIDEO

MILWAUKEE, Wis.— As Wisconsin waits for Congress to pass much-needed economic relief, last night Opportunity Wisconsin and Main Street Alliance virtually sat down with Wisconsin Treasurer Sarah Godlewski and small business owners from across the state.

“Now that the election results have been decided and certified, it’s long past time for our elected officials to move forward together to address the many issues still facing Wisconsinites,” said Melissa Bucholz of Odd Duck in Milwaukee. “Small businesses are the backbone of our economy. For months of the COVID-19 pandemic, small business owners have been left to fend for themselves in Wisconsin.” [WATCH]

Participants discussed the difficulties that they still face due to the bungled COVID-19 response under the current administration, how economic uncertainty has impacted their day-to-day lives, the changes they have had to make to try to remain operational and keep on their staff during the pandemic, and the economic impacts of those changes.

“[Congress] passed the Paycheck Protection Program, and while that did help some small businesses, it was also riddled with mismanagement, as literally millions went to large corporations - we’re talking pharmaceutical companies and hedge funds and private equity,” said State Treasurer Godlewski. “And that was money that was supposed to go to Main Street, not Wall Street.” [WATCH]

On Friday morning, U.S. Senator Ron Johnson objected to a request for the Senate to pass $1,200 direct COVID relief payments to individuals making up to $75,000 per year, citing the deficit. In 2017, Senator Johnson supported President Trump's tax cuts for billionaires and big corporations, which added $1.3 trillion to the deficit.

“Let’s be fair. Senator Ron Johnson is working very, very hard...at embarrassing himself,” said Darren Price of BP Smokehouse BBQ in Tomah. “I have yet to hear words come out of his mouth about Wisconsin businesses and what we’re going through. There’s a total disconnect.”  [WATCH]

Price continued, “We do need help. We need assistance from our representatives, and I can’t wrap my head around the fact that these people work for us, yet in this crisis, they don’t hear us. They have their own agenda and it has nothing to do with the small business operator who is the backbone [of the community].” [WATCH]

“[Majority Leader] McConnell, put the bills out there, please. There’s $50 billion that passed the House for child care with strong bipartisan support. You won’t even let it see the light of day,” said Corrine Hendrickson of Corrine’s Little Explorers in New Glarus. “Senator Johnson, I have reached out to your office. I either get nothing back, or I get ‘that’s a state’s issue.’ Well I’m sorry, but you’re my federal representative for my state, so why are you not bringing my state dollars back?” [WATCH]

Participants in Thursday night’s conversation also lamented the patchwork of public health enforcement across the state and country and how it has impacted their ability to do business.

“The idea that public health recommendations have become politicized is mind blowing, and our elected leaders should be role models and lead the charge in public health and keeping the public safe and healthy,” said Joella Striebel of Old Towne Strings in La Crosse. “We want our businesses to thrive, we want our customers to be able to safely patronize our businesses, we want to be safe while we’re at work and trying to keep our businesses going, so seeing that politicized is very disappointing and very frustrating.” [WATCH]

“Without small businesses, our communities do not exist. Any town can have an Applebee’s and a Walmart and all that, but without the Odd Ducks and Bounce Milwaukees and barbecue places, our communities are not the same, and once these businesses die, we can’t bring that back in the same way. We lose the community,” said Becky Cooper of Bounce in Milwaukee. [WATCH]

Outrage and Exhaustion Mount as State COVID Deaths Top 4,000 Following Months of Inaction on Pandemic Relief

WATCH VIDEO

VIEW/DOWNLOAD PHOTOS

MADISON, Wis.— Today, as hospitals reach capacity, bone-weary nurses alarmed by Republican state legislators’ choice to lift up radical election conspiracy theories while blocking COVID relief spoke up outside the Wisconsin State Capitol. The state legislature has not convened or taken any action on COVID since last spring, even as more than 4,000 Wisconsinites have lost their lives and the virus continues to surge.

Pat, a nurse on the front lines of COVID-19 shared, “We are stressed. We are tired. We are exhausted. But we are still giving our hearts and souls to our friends and family and all Wisconsinites. And what have Wisconsin Republican legislators done? Nothing.”

As the heroic healthcare workers held a banner reading, “Stop The Circus - COVID Relief Now!” a mobile billboard with the same message circulated around Capitol Square urging the public to contact Republican legislators.

“How many more people have to die for politicians to figure this out? Healthcare workers are traumatized. Now for the first time in 8 months, Republicans are back at work. Not about COVID, but for a sham hearing about our election,” said Kate, a frontline healthcare worker.

Registered nurses and other healthcare professionals put their lives on the line every day, working longer and longer hours to care for an ever-increasing number of seriously ill patients. The state GOP has shut down every effort to rein in the virus, yet made the shameless, unconscionable decision to hold a hearing on Friday to air radical conspiracy theories about an election already decided by voters.

Today’s event came on the heels of a virtual roundtable, hosted by Opportunity Wisconsin, Citizen Action Wisconsin Northwestern Organizing Cooperative, and SEIU Healthcare Wisconsin, where State Representative Mark Spreitzer was joined by patients and providers from across the Badger State who shared what they urgently need as COVID continues to devastate our communities. Participants called on elected officials to stop the political circus and enact economic and public health relief now.

WATCH: Virtual Statewide Roundtable with Rep. Mark Spreitzer.

“When people vote, the will of the people is done, and there are some folks in power right now who don’t like the will of the people and will do whatever it takes to make sure that it isn't done. This hearing is a complete distraction from the COVID response that we need,” said Rep. Spreitzer. “It’s telling to me that the Assembly Health Committee hasn’t had a hearing, the Assembly of Small Business Committee hasn’t had a hearing, the Assembly of Labor Committee hasn’t had a hearing, but instead the Assembly Campaigns and Elections Committee is having a hearing to investigate an election that went smoothly, and that was over more than a month ago.” [WATCH]

“If we don’t get action from the legislature, it’s going to push out the skilled workers, the skilled people like myself who have been in health care for years. That is a massive amount of experience that we would be losing,” said Tammy Kahel, a long term care CNA from Madison. If we feel we are being left behind, and use the metaphor, but being led like lambs to a slaughter, how is that going to keep us in the field? I have tried to take care of the residents to the best of my ability, but like all of us, I’m tired.” [WATCH]
